I'm sure you've all seen the NASA release of today. It's big news.

Not water on Mars but liquid (salty) water on Mars close to surface. People already knew or guessed that water in some kind of form was in or beneath Mars.
In terms of news, it's not particularly big. It's big for NASA's budget, perhaps, or their reason for existence given the competition from more competent/daring private contractors.
The breakthrough concerning primordial life will come from the study of water itself, such as the 70+ anomalies of water or phenomenons like the water bridge.
Mars may provide a way for scientists to justify studying the phenomenon in more depth, since they can't claim the water was contaminated by human interference so much, if they find the mythical Primordial Soup.
