The oval shape is to keep the shot from rolling out of a shallow sling pocket. Any kid who used a leather belt as a sling could tell them.

I've seen pretty sarcastic things painted on bombs and artillery shells. Granted, one isn't going to see that on the receiving end, but I kinda think that such things are really meant for the shooter, more than the shootee.
