1: Old News! We already got hot and bothered about this story in 2016, and don't notice it's the same story from then. 2: Have you SEEN a 1953 issue $2 note? The back looks wrong (like it was printed at the wrong scale), and the red seal is unlike anything currently circulating. 3: The cashier is not a numismatist, but is charged to be wary of what doesn't look right. And the "2nd opinion" is for better or worse, the "counterfeit detection pen" which will indicate any pre-1960 bill as 'counterfeit' (but won't identify bleached-$1-notes-reprinted-as-$50-notes, nor any wrong-paper fake bill that's been sprayed with hairspray . . . .
