Technically, Gandalf would be a Viking/Scandinavian name. Perhaps that's where the author got it from.

That would make the fall of Scandinavia due to Human Weakness, a rather ironic prophecy from a fantasy writer.

Well, not perhaps. Tolkien knew what he was doing in naming the "Wand-elf." He took the name from a historic Norse list of dwarves, as he did most of the dwarves from the Hobbit -- and many of the goblins.
