Smartphones, Social Media, and the Youth

I have observed several discussions about this subject led by some of you. I want to think about it in terms of the danger to military recruitment of a youth that seems increasingly to be struggling with mental illness (as well as obesity and drug use). This, then, is what we used to call a 'bleg,' i.e. a request by a blogger for links and information. What are your favorite pieces on these issues, which make and defend what you consider to be the most important points?

Possibly useful: Some data from Jon Haidt, who believes that the Teen Mental Health Epidemic (as he calls it) began circa 1912, and that the Covid lockdown era had some impact on accelerating the trend for girls, but did not affect the preexisting trend line for boys:

Note that he has a link to an earlier post, which also has a lot of additional thoughts and data.

1912? That can’t be right.

2012, I recall. I was also going to mention Haidt and Lukianoff. I think there is a lot of "kids these days" stuff that doesn't have a lot of science behind it, but they have been good. I think Rob Henderson has had some links, which I will try and track down. I will also ask Bethany.

Here's a HotAir article w/ discussion of Haidt's ideas & links. Apparently he's writing a book about this.

APA article w/ references to psychological research on use of Instagram. Has book references at the end.

I'll try to find other articles that had an impact on me.

Yes, it was 2012.

David, I haven't adjusted well to the 21st century, either.

Grim, I think somewhere I have material that you might find relevant, but I can't quickly come up w/ it, so it'll have to wait for the weekend.

Thank you, everyone. I'll begin working through all this (and anything else you send, as you send it).

These aren't the ones I was thinking of, but here are two more that might be relevant for you:

Hot Air - mostly about increased teen depression

Hot Air again - Tik Tok tics, other mental health issues

They do overlap with the Hot Air link in my comment above, but the articles provide other links as well.
