This environmental scare piece about sand depletion reminded us of the old joke about what would happen if the USSR took over the Sahara Desert: "For five years, nothing, and then a sand shortage."
Stupid question time... does the Sahara miss having that sand? Do the locals need it? And if it's being moved from point A to point B, then unless point B is somehow located off planet it strikes me that we are not reducing the global quantity of sand.
