The only thing that would have made it better is if the other player had responded, "Yeah, OK. We'll make a handshake contract on that right now, that you'll agree in front of all these witnesses to be legally binding and enforceable by the courts."
Of course, then if the guy chose 'split,' he'd have been in violation of the terms of the contract.
