Father's Day

From Sippican:
My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard.  Mother would come out and say, "You're tearing up the grass."  "We're not raising grass," Dad would reply.  "We're raising boys."

We were always tearing up the grass, and it was my Dad that did the fussing.

Well, on Mother's Day we'll have to revise the quotation in honor of your mom.

I can honestly say, I never had either parent ever complain about us tearing up the yard. One day, when I announced at the dinner table that I wanted to be a paleontologist and dig for dinosaur bones in our yard. My father said that was a great idea and pointed me over to the corner of the yard where he was going to turn over the soil for the garden, and gave me a shovel. An hour or two of digging revealed no bones, but did save my father a bit of work on the garden.
