For anyone looking for stories for the younger set that rely heavily on the Western notions of hard work and personal responsibility, honesty and honor, you can do no better than the semi-autobiographical books by Ralph Moody. ...about 8 books in all.

The first is titled, "Little Britches," and there we meet 8 year old Ralph and his family, who have moved from New Hampshire to a ranch near Denver, Colorado in 1906. He works alongside his father, learning to build and fix. He earns nickels a day herding horses and cattle, so that he can contribute to the family's upkeep. He rides with adults on cattle drives, and earns their respect as well.

A great series for young readers.
