Looks to me like Martians are making a rude statement toward Opportunity. And rather than hiding behind a rock, they're counting coup, sitting on top of Opportunity's camera.
Mars is actually inhabited by a sapient species with exoskeletons that closely resemble mineralific agglomerations (aka rocks). One walked into the camera shot because it failed to notice the little red "recording in progress" light.
Why are you all looking at me like that? This is only my third glass for the night.
