My father-in-law was an essential Douglas Aircraft employee and was exempt from the draft. While traveling back to Long Beach from East Africa his ship stopped in New Zealand. He fell in with a platoon of Marines on R and R after Guadalcanal. He told me, "I really respected the way those boys looked out for one another." A few months after returning to Southern California he joined up. He eventually put in 4 years with the Marines, and 43 years with McDonald Douglas. I think he was always more proud of that time with the Marines.
