A Reasonable Point

"Giving your child a dumb name like ABCDE should be considered child abuse because you’re willing to condemn your child to a lifetime of mockery so you can get attention."

Relevant story.

I wouldn't want the government to have authority to prosecute for 'child abuse,' but I definitely think that we should adopt the cultural stance that this sort of thing is an abusive behavior. We ought to treat parents who do this to their children as bad people.

By the way, why are all these crazy stories coming out of Texas? What's going on down there? Texas used to be reliable.

It's interesting that WaPo chose not to publish Southwest's alleged apology in its article.

It's also interesting that Southwest chose not to indicate whether the miscreant employees--the gate agent and the social media poster (who may not be the same person)--were fired over this. Corporations are part of our culture--especially so, since they're persons for the purpose of quite a number of our laws.

why are all these crazy stories coming out of Texas?

What has California to do with Texas?

The mother is Texan. The airport is in California, but the people in the airport were reacting in an ordinary way to something strange enough to be funny.

It would have made sense if the facts were the other way around: a California mother choosing to name her child "Abcde," and a Texan crowd finding themselves astonished by it. But somehow it's not the reverse, it is what it is.

So the crazy story is coming out of California....

And it wasn't "people in an airport" acting, it was professional Californian employees ridiculing a customer and her daughter.

You have to take Austin into account.

Austin and parts of Dallas and Ft. Worth. There are some pockets of Progressivism, as well as just plain crazy.

"Keep Austin Weird" so the rest of us are spared. ;)
