The other side has long loved to laugh at the troglodytes etc. on the other side of the aisle. Lefties/liberals/progressives do not like the laughter being reciprocated, especially since they tend to consider themselves the Good People opposing the Evil People. One DOES NOT LAUGH at the Good People.
