World's Largest Extant Viking Ship Visits Rekjavik

Looks like a good time, although I imagine it's usually easy to find a good time in Iceland.

In the summer, judging only by my very brief exposure, Reykjavik is a 24 hour party- I think it is like Fairbanks in the summer, the people get sun drunk after the long dark winters. There is a sort of slightly crazy vibe in the air.

Cool ship, want to go a' viking? Vashon Is in the Puget Sound looks ripe for plucking, and none left to defend it save lawyers, massage therapists and barista's. .... We can strike after they all leave on the ferry for Seattle in the morning, close the docks and run up the Dragon Ensign, all in time to leave the drinking hours open. We can expect lots of support from the ancient indigenous inhabitants, those who still carry a lunchbox instead of a laptop. Piece of cake!
Oh, yes, since we will be illegal immigrants, we can foresee full support from the Seattle City council, the State of WA, and the Feds.

  2. That sounds great. I was just told yesterday that the Puget Sound area was somewhere I ought to visit. How better than on a longboat?

  3. I've been following the progress of this ship since before they started construction (it was built near one of my ancestral homes). It will be in Duluth for the Tall Ships Festival beginning Aug. 18, and I plan to get up there to see it one way or another.

Sailing close to the wind in swells with a square rig- very cool!.

    The launching video-

I did a double take on the origin of the ceremonial liquor-
    Mead- from Lindisfarne!

  6. There's a tall ships festival in Duluth!? I may have to clear my schedule ...

Also, cool ship, and I second the notion that the Puget Sound area is ripe for pillaging.

  7. Ah, all the ports it will visit are well outside my usual range. I'll have to think on this.
