They have a seldom noted but outstanding feature. The flat sided action cradles in the fingers easily without needing much gripping force to keep the gun secure, thus making hand carry for miles much easier than the big round stock on a bolt gun. Pump shotguns have this also. Most of the places I have hiked, having the gun in hand is a benefit- walking down an Alaskan river bank in thick brush, etc.
I like lever guns, too - for much the same reason that I like revolvers - they are just plain more enjoyable to use.
Besides my own personal preference (which I'm inclined to discount because I'm weird) I've noticed that when I take someone shooting for the first time, they'll try everything I show them, but the ones they ask to shoot again are mostly the lever actions.
I mostly have owned older levers -- the main one I use is a Winchester 94 from the 1960s -- but I have to say that some of the stuff being made today is fantastic. Henry Arms has a huge line of levers now, and their actions are smooth as silk.
