I know all those places except probably where you got the chili burger and fries. I used to drive up Charlie's Creek a lot, as well as up 281 to Wolf Creek.
A long time ago, probably about 28 years ago, I lived for a short time at the top of Nettie Mtn Rd. It runs a couple of miles from NC 281 over to Charlie's Creek.
That's a long pull -- as you know, not necessarily in distance so much as in difficulty. It takes a long time to get anywhere up in the mountains. None of the roads go where you want, because of ridges and rivers, and all of them are twisty and dangerous.
Motorcyclists have to take care up on those roads because a lot of the drivers up there take their own half out of the middle when going around the curves. I used to sometimes take the road through the Quebec community down to Hwy 64 or go on out 281 to Slick Fisher Rd and on into Lake Toxaway.
As an aside...if you're a resident of the area up there, we probably know/knew some of the same people. I lived and worked in the area for about 25 years or so.
Yeah, you're not wrong about the cagers up here. They love to take their half in the middle.
I haven't been here a long time. Just a couple of years. I'm only beginning to get to know my neighbors, who understandably view me as a dangerous-looking outlaw. It takes a while for some of them to figure out what a nice guy I am.
Yeah, it takes a while for the locals to accept newcomers. I found that out when we moved to Jackson County from SoCal. It was culture shock for us in 1975 for sure.
And you should definitely try the chili burger if you get back this way. It's two doors northwest of the Harley-Davidson dealer, a place called Box Car Cafe & Cones.
I always enjoy your photo essays.

ReplyDeleteYes, I know it. They spell it with two “d”s now, but it’s surely the same road. Big Christmas tree farm at the top.
ReplyDeleteThere was a mobile home at that big tree field. That's where I lived. Used to drive down to Salem, SC six days a week for work.

You may consider yourself excepted from any remark addressed to “kids.” :)
