The writer of the NBC piece and the academic cited both appear to be firm believers in thought-crime.
And strained logic: Trump appeals to racists, so anyone who votes for Trump is racist, so his policies are racist, so voting for Trump violates US Federal law, so voting for Trump means the person must be racist and the vote is invalid.
Some people really do need to get out of the ivory tower more often.
