In point of fact, it would be healthier for our politics if people would stop "feeling" their way to answers all together. I should make bumperstickers: "Stop Feeling, Start Thinking!"
My rule of thumb: if people are trying to make me feel guilty, they have ulterior motives.
That's not 100% true--for example, a vegetarian may truly believe that cows are holy and so I should not eat them. Some things really are sins, and your or my conscience may be seared and in need of some reminders--though I expect reminders to be rational. ("Thou art the man!") I can think of quite a number of people who really need a good dose of indictment. I generally leave that job to God, though.
