I don't know the book or the TV show, but here's a video by a scholar on how well it fits the mythology. He was mostly impressed. There's some good lessons along the way on Old Norse versus Old English, the stories being drawn upon, and so forth.
I am deeply bitter about American Gods. It came out right around the same time as my book Wolf Time, which is also about Odin showing up in the modern world. Apparently America was only prepared to embrace one such book at the time, and it wasn't mine.
I saw at the end of the video that the good Professor has written a translation of the Edda with a bonus 'Cowboy Havamal'! He reads a bit in another video he's done- it's fantastic!
Having read the book, it's clear that Gaiman did his research. I didn't realize quite how well he had done it, though. It's well worth the read.
ReplyDeleteCan't speak to how well this comes through in the TV show.

ReplyDeleteThe Norse gods and giants were already in the 2nd temple literature and scriptures.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that, Mr. Walker. I should read your book, though. I have more time now for reading than I've had in quite a while.
