I've been trying to figure out whom he compares to- Paul Butterfield,James Brown, Lyle Lovett's Big Band, NRBQ. Still don't know, but I do know I like Rateliff's music. Taut. Great variation in orchestration.
On a second listen, you know what it sounds like? In its march up through otherwise traditional blues notes, on a major key, it's most like the Blues Brothers.

ReplyDeleteNow, I really like this. Not because it's my usual thing, which it isn't at all -- I like it because it's its own thing.

ReplyDeleteYeah, it definitely has a Blues Brothers vibe to it. Even the video has some of that look and feel to it.
