One government official tried to put the blame on the students.Hey, fruits and vegetables are good for you. Less good for you? Being taught that an American citizen eats what his government tells him, whether that leaves him hungry or not.
"One thing I think we need to keep in mind as kids say they're still hungry is that many children aren't used to eating fruits and vegetables at home, much less at school. So it's a change in what they are eating. If they are still hungry, it's that they are not eating all the food that's being offered," USDA Deputy Undersecretary Janey Thornton was quoted as saying.
Not that the plan doesn't have other advantages.
Despite the fact that the new regulations have increased the cost of a lunch 20 to 25 cents per plate, it’s not pleasing students.Ingrates. If the government service costs more than it used to, it must be worth more. That's just simple economics.
It's even worse than that.
ReplyDeleteIn THIS area, if a student does not take his fruits and veggies when commanded to, the cost of his lunch is escalated.
I am not making that up.
It is my firm contention that administrators of these programs be required to eat the exact same lunches the students get. Prepared by the same staff in the same manner, and in fact, taken from the same trays as the students. I am willing to bet they'd be less than pleased to be forced to eat the slop that students are served daily. I never knew a teacher that willingly ate it.
ReplyDeleteThe Wall Street Journal had an article several weeks ago about this, using CA as an example. Apparently what pleases adult palates and is wonderful when prepared by a professional chef looses something when made in bulk by cafeteria cooks and inflicted on teenagers and grade school kids. Who would have guessed?

Whenever I was a student teacher and then a substitute teacher, I NEVER, EVER, EVER forgot my lunch because I did not want to be in the unfortunate position of having no alternative but to eat that nastiness served in the elementary cafeteria...
ReplyDeleteMy point exactly LR & ML :)
