The First Day of Spring (Subjective)

Objectively, spring is still almost a month away.  Subjectively, it was eighty degrees and sunny today, and the pear trees have broken out in beautiful white blossoms.

What a fine day for a ride.

A couple of miles away, a neighbor's heraldic sign.

A Troll Valley-style house in Hartwell, Georgia.

A similar but nicer home -- sadly some of the details are obscured by the tree.  Note the Scottish Rampant Lion flying beneath Old Glory.

A fine day to wash your boots in the Savannah River.

Down by the riverside.

Currahee Mountain, on the return leg.

  1. And a fine day for walking about over here, too. Sunny, mild (+8C), no wind, and the mud from the snowmelt has pretty much solidified.

Tonight's supposed to be -6C with flurries. A "two-pair of socks day" come the morning...

  3. Just exactly where are you at the moment, Bill?

Lars, you're welcome, although in fairness it's just what I thought of when I saw the thing.

  5. I seem to remember that too, but it's a modestly sized neighborhood. I was wondering if there was a more specific location available.

  6. I love those houses. They're exactly what I think houses should look like. A nightmare to maintain, unfortunately, and almost no one knows how to build them any more. The house we built for ourselves has some of the elements I admire from that style, but is much simpler, a coastal-plantation style with a 360-degree porch, up on stilts, as befits this storm-surge area. Gables but no turrets.

  7. We were looking at houses down near our kids in Georgia, though I don't know what we'd do with an extra house :p

I keep trying to get the spouse to move nearer to them but there's the whole job issue. The commute to DC would be a real bear, even on a motorcycle like Grim's!

  8. T99,

It's a kind of house I really enjoy looking at, although I'd like something a little sturdier -- a log home, say, or a stone. Still, if you must live in balloon frame construction (and most of us must, including me at the moment), why not have the beauty?

    Cass,

I'd like to make that commute on the motorcycle this year, but I expect to take a week to do it. I'm hoping to be able to head up the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Shenandoah National Park, visit some friends in the DC area, and then work my way back down again. It's certainly not something you can do for work!

Currahee! My adopted grandfather was with the 501st of the 101st and has a Currahee oak growing in his yard in Atlanta.

The first yard flowers are blooming out here. No wildflowers are forecast because of the ongoing dry spell, unless you count fireflowers.

Looks like it was a lovely ride. :)

Looks like you are toting one of Jim Bowie's namesakes?

  11. That's right. That blade is thunderbolt iron: you can read about it here, and see a photo (bottom picture, top knife).

  12. Currently residing in KAIA North, HQ-ISAF, right across the street from the USA/USMC NSE, and next to the NLD and ITA NSEs. Work is outside the wire, out of the MoI-AIU hangar, between NATC and the ANA ramp.

Geez, and I thought Iraq was over-acronymed...
