Objectively, spring is still almost a month away. Subjectively, it was eighty degrees and sunny today, and the pear trees have broken out in beautiful white blossoms.

ReplyDeleteI love those houses. They're exactly what I think houses should look like. A nightmare to maintain, unfortunately, and almost no one knows how to build them any more. The house we built for ourselves has some of the elements I admire from that style, but is much simpler, a coastal-plantation style with a 360-degree porch, up on stilts, as befits this storm-surge area. Gables but no turrets.

ReplyDeleteI keep trying to get the spouse to move nearer to them but there's the whole job issue. The commute to DC would be a real bear, even on a motorcycle like Grim's!

ReplyDeleteIt's a kind of house I really enjoy looking at, although I'd like something a little sturdier -- a log home, say, or a stone. Still, if you must live in balloon frame construction (and most of us must, including me at the moment), why not have the beauty?

I'd like to make that commute on the motorcycle this year, but I expect to take a week to do it. I'm hoping to be able to head up the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Shenandoah National Park, visit some friends in the DC area, and then work my way back down again. It's certainly not something you can do for work!
