The display about the explosion in their museum is one of the few things I recall from visiting Halifax. (I was 3.5 at the time). The topography worked against everyone, and the weather made it worse.

LittleRed1Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5173950.post-67010245882278627502013-04-19T15:13:14.615-04:002013-04-19T15:13:14.615-04:00We had some very dangerous chemical and industrial...We had some very dangerous chemical and industrial plants in the south end of the county where I grew up. One of them even had a functioning nuclear reactor. The only reason I knew about it was that my father was with the Volunteer Fire Department. These kinds of things are not well-publicized -- it does no good to the industry who wants to build such a plant to mention the dangers, nor to the commissioners who want to approve the construction so as to get the tax revenue. The plant wasn't "nestled among" the town, it was on the edge of it. Looking at it again just now, it's not even within the city limits (assuming the dotted line is the limit)

West, Texas

Fertilizer plant

I can't argue the town didn't expand closer to the plant, but as you can see, there is nothing but open field to the east.Miss Ladybughttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05036711338399907180noreply@blogger.com
