What a joke. "occupation by ICE." Petulant Democrats and other assorted leftist crying about the National Guard and federal law enforcement cleaning up the city after the failure of their local leaders to do so does not impress me. Where were these people when the National Guard was deployed to D.C for over six months after Jan 6??? That was done for nothing more than political theater. At least this time they are helping to clean up a city that has had an out-of-control crime problem. As someone who actually lives in the area, works in Arlington, and regularly goes into D.C., not just occasionally visits, I can attest to the fact that D.C. has not been a safe place (far from it). At least now, someone is doing something about it.
There seems to be some amnesia about that. I’ve asked the people I’ve talked to about the National Guard deployment after January 6th, amd nobody seems willing to admit that they remember it. It was definitely not received the same way as this one.
I think mostly it’s tribal; that was their team, so of course it was done for good reasons and wasn’t worth getting upset about. Partly though I do think it’s because most of these troops are Southerners from Red states; we have come far enough apart as a nation that this feels like a foreign army to many people here.

How would they know? My experience of most on the left is they wouldn't know the difference between a platoon and a division, much less have any idea where specific units come from.
I’m sure you’re right. They wouldn’t know the history either. But they do read the newspaper, which has reported on where the units are from and that they’re all being sent by Trump-supporting governors.
I'm used to seeing presentism aimed at the past, but that Buck Rogers vid is pretty clearly presentism aimed at the future. Clearly, the 1970s had the best attitude, best music, best dance moves, and best fighter pilots, even though we didn't have any space fighter pilots in the 1970s.

These are not people known for intellectual consistency.

DeleteAh, I see.
DeleteBy the way, I’ll be in Arlington this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI'll be there on Tuesday. Monday is a holiday. If you are still around we can link up.
DeleteSadly, I won’t. I might be back in October.

ReplyDeleteThe roller skate disco is hard to top. Not everyone looks as good in the skin tight outfits as Erin Gray, though.
DeleteIt may well be that the 70s had a good claim on ‘best music ever,’ but this isn’t it.
Maybe the roller disco didn’t make the cut. Here it is:
