In turn, many modern poets have criticized him.

Let me rephrase that final sentence: many modern poets have criticized Gioia for speaking the truth.

I developed a loathing for poetry from English classes in high school and college. Years later I rediscovered poetry, making the realization that it is meant to be spoken and listened to.

As long as universities continue to provide faculty positions for professional poets, they will not feel the need to produce poems that those outside the poet cadre will purchase.Gringonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5173950.post-51112574363288217932016-04-24T21:05:46.317-04:002016-04-24T21:05:46.317-04:00A number of years ago I was doing some research an...A number of years ago I was doing some research and came across a digitized copy of an 1850s era catalog for NYU. We started shifting away from classical knowledge and toward science and modern knowledge.Tomnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5173950.post-89357325110837776542016-04-24T20:53:53.695-04:002016-04-24T20:53:53.695-04:00"...Alexander Pope..."
Most probably hi..."...Alexander Pope..."

Most probably his Odyssey, or possibly his Iliad, as an English introduction to works that those who went to college in the 1890s would later be expected to read in Greek.
