I am SOOOO old I remember a time when a Tom Clancy novel had a plot point depending on the patriotism of CNN. While the whole world was watching, CNN cooperated with the president to broadcast "fake news" about the progress of repairs (and ultimately, even the location) of an aircraft carrier.
Of all the unbelievable features of Tom Clancy novels I think, now, that's the clear winner.

CNN is owned by telecommunications giant AT&T. So the assertion implies that AT&T can decide who can and cannot become President of the United States.
"You're going to have to answer to the Coca-Cola company."
I read it a little differently.
"Nice campaign (life) you got there. Would be a shame if anything happened to it. We got a lot of tapes but nobody needs to see them if you do the right thing.'
I loved the part where he was afraid to say his usual creepy stuff directly to the candidate because he knew the candidate wouldn't hesitate to tell the public all about it. That was certainly a first for everyone.
