It's not, but it is an interesting choice of focus. I love football, but the concussion issue is likely to kill the sport. It's creating real tragedies out of the lives of virtuous young men, and for what? Entertainment, as she says.
Well, men are disposable. What's really important is the harm to women -- not these women right here, of course, as they are making huge fortunes off this performance. No, some hypothetical women somewhere. They might be hurt in some way or other by this display. The guys whose heads are getting literally (not figuratively or theoretically) bashed during the actual game? The harm to them isn't even worth noticing.
So we have a spectacle of a bunch of bulked up men, half of whom appear to be felons, sporting "honorary" college degrees, disrespecting the flag and country which has spewed money at them for smashing each other up, while fifty year old sluts gyrate like crack whores with a new stash? All with the seal of approval of the governing body.
I was reading a government textbook (I have some . . . disagreements with the authors' choices of examples, but no one's perfect), and taking a walk. I caught the important bits (Jeep and Cheetos commercials, Chiefs' second-half touchdown as I washed dishes.)
Those guys smashing into each other and risking brain damage (by no means is it proven that it's a guaranteed result for all, and honestly, I think they're going to find that steroid use was a factor ultimately) isn't hurting me or society (I don't think), and they are supposed to be interested in protecting themselves- and not leading with their heads which is actually poor tackling form. Those, ahem, women, are doing something publicly that lowers the standards for common decency, and that *does* affect all of us. So I see a difference.
