Dark Island

Apparently everyone knows this beautiful song but me.  I've never heard it before today.

Beautiful song and scenery. I don't recall hearing the song before

A great-grandmother's maiden name was Kerr.

I had never heard it either. It was apparently written for the 1963 movie.

I also had not heard the song. My grandmother’s family (Thurmonds) is from the region, but that was centuries ago.

It's not that old, but it's been extensively covered since the 1963 movie, so being a folkie/accoustic enthusiast, I thought I'd have heard it before.

It's nice on a tin whistle.

The Dark Island
David Silver & Ian MacLachlan

Am Em C G
Away to the west ward I'm longing to be,
G Em G D
Where the beauties of heaven unfold by the sea
Am Em C G
Where the sweet purple heather blooms fragrant and free
G D C G
On a hilltop high above - The Dark Is- land

Chorus
G C G
Oh, isle of my childhood, I'm dreaming of thee,
G Em G D
As the steamer leaves Oban and passes Tiree
Am Em C G
Soon I'll capture the magic that lingers for me
G D C G
When I'm back once more upon - The Dark Is- land

Am Em C G
So gentle the sea breeze that ripples the bay
G Em G D
Where the stream joins the ocean and young children play
Am Em C G
On the strand of pure silver I'll welcome each day
G D C G
And I'll roam forever more - The Dark Is- land

Am Em C G
True gems of the Hebrides bathed in the light
G Em G D
Of the mid-summer dawning that follows the night
Am Em C G
How I yearn for the cries of the seagull in flight
G D C G
As they circle high above - The Dark Is- land
