France to Ban "Unsanctioned Protests"

Guess who makes the decision on whether or not your protest is sanctioned?

All this started over an attempt to impose climate-change policies including new taxes.

Sanction
1. To give official authorization or approval to
3. To penalize

So, I suppose the only demonstrations that will be...verboten...are those that go ignored. Which ordinarily would be forbidding enough.

Heh. Those types of words are called auto-antonyms or in this piece about them, contranyms.

Okay, given that most of their "protests" involve burning cars and the police response is to forbid gendarmes from entering those areas of the city... I don't really see this as anything more than posturing. Especially when the police all but took sides WITH the protesters in l'affair of the Yellow Vests. I think this is nothing more but the government elite issuing decrees and expecting reality to comply. An idea that didn't work out so well for the Bourbons.
