'Allow Me To Revise & Extend My Remarks'

"Lots of talk about snipers this weekend (the holiday weekend of a great man, killed by a sniper), so I thought I'd weigh in with what I was raised to believe about snipers," Moore wrote in his post. "My dad was in the First Marine Division in the South Pacific in World War II. His brother, my uncle, Lawrence Moore, was an Army paratrooper and was killed by a Japanese sniper 70 years ago next month."

He explained that his views were passed down to him by his father.

"My dad always said, 'Snipers are cowards. They don't believe in a fair fight. Like someone coming up from behind you and coldcocking you. Just isn't right. It's cowardly to shoot a person in the back. Only a coward will shoot someone who can't shoot back.' "

"I don't think most Americans think of snipers as heroes," he added.
Uh-huh. And that part about how the Iraqis shooting Americans from rooftops were to be praised for resisting "invaders"?

You picked your side. Your father and uncle, were they here today, would kick your ass through your teeth.

Not to mention people who bomb civilians. Do they think the civilians are going to bomb them back?

Heh. In Iraq? It's not impossible. :)

Not sure why Moore should get all this air time in response.

Guess it's a slow news day for the intellectually bankrupt NLMSM.

@MatBest11x says, "I tried dressing up as Michael Moore but I got diabetes trying".

Mat's a funny guy.

This is a good formulation too, from a Special Forces sniper.

"It’s typical of “men” like you to criticize the intestinal fortitude, focus, discipline and patriotism of a sniper. It must stem from an inferiority complex or something. But hey, it’s okay cupcake. We snipers are thick skinned and the efforts of world class turds such as yourself to portray us in a negative light only makes us laugh. If you and I were in the same room, I’d throw you a smile and gently pat you on the head knowing you’re nothing more than a mouth breathing, Crisco sweating waste of space..."

"..Crisco sweating..." I love that insult. I'm going to steal that.

Funny thing is, I know in some units in the European theater, there were designated squad snipers in US formations during WWII.

And everybody employed them in the trench warfare of WWI.

And snipers were used in Vietnam, where I think the present tactics evolved from.

I think Moore's pa and uncle are just reflecting the style of land warfare in the Pacific in WWII. Assault landings aren't subtle, and don't have any need of snipers, like you might when trying to control an urban area. And of course, when General Halsey tells you to "Kill Japs, Kill Japs and Kill more Japs" well, that has it's own effect.

It's possible that his father was just bitter about his brother's death, too. Or that Moore invented the story to justify himself: he hasn't always played straight with the facts.

I had the same thought as that last. Stories do smooth and simplify over time, certainly. But this one seemed a bit too pat.
