We had to lie

Yeah, we lied and we played hide the ball, but that's what it took to get the bill passed, so what choice did we have?  And now, what, the Supreme Court is going to enforce the stuff that we wrote that way on purpose to induce people to misunderstand us?  How fair is that?

Well said. That seems to be the attitude, and no mere populace will change it.

I look at this man, even just the way he holds his hands, and think: "Well, of course he wants a state that fools the voters into redistribution. This guy would starve to death if he had to raise food for himself."

Sort of like the current Secretary of State, who supported the second Gulf War and then got all bent out of shape because Bush the Younger went ahead and did what he'd said he was going to do. All that invasion stuff, Kerry actually thought, was just tough talk with no intent of action.

One of the ordinary principles of legislative interpretation is that the legislature knows how to write law, and means what it says. We will see if this principle is applied by the current court.

I haven't been able to find out where or when that video was shot, but I'm sure his remarks were taken out of context. :-)
