Riding in the Rain

Good ride today. Dodged the thunderheads as well as I could, as long as I could, but rode back in it. It's a good idea to stay out of the stuff because it isn't safe, but it is invigorating.

It's a good time of year. The firewood was laid in during the summer, and needs no more attention until it's time to start bringing it in during the cold. Need to clear some weeds now that the cool weather will slow them growing back, weed-and-seed that pasture. Clear the gutters, a few other tasks, but mostly the autumn season is relaxing. It is full of beautiful days, when there's 'no better place than the saddle, and no better companion than the rifle or the oar.'

Riding in the fall is sweet- the air is cool and dense, there is just a tickle of late summer, scattered leaves to blow around, oh yes.

As long as one is on a back road, the rain is clean from the sky- mercifully free of the scuzzy road gorp kicked up by the trucks on the interstate.

If you need an oar when you're in the saddle, I say you must be riding that horse in a certain creek (which implies you are actually without a paddle)... metaphorically speaking that is.

Mike,

I thought the quote was better known. It ought to be!

One of the worst hours of my life was getting caught in the rain, short sleeved, and having to ride back through it, rain drops like needles stinging all the way.

I'm sure, if you're prepared for it, and on the right road it's wonderful.

I do love fall, though.
