Racism in Sports

The Chicago Blackhawks are somewhat unique in all this.

1) The name honors a specific Native American individual who lived in the Chicago area.

2) There is a stylized Chief Blackhawk logo. It is not, however, a caricature (e.g., "Chief Wahoo" for the Cleveland Indians).

3) There is no mascot. There has never been a dancing Chief Blackhawk. There is no Chief Blackhawk cartoon. There is no depiction of a Chief Blackhawk shooting a puck, using a tomahawk or shooting an arrow - in fact, there is no depiction of him at all other than the logo itself.

4) The logo is on the floor of the Blackhawks locker room. However, no one is ever allowed to set foot on it. Disrespect for the Blackhawks logo will get you in trouble, fast, with anyone connected with the team or any fan.

5) The Chicago Blackhawks has been owned by the same family for decades. They have absolutely no intention of changing the logo or the team name and up to this point there has been no serious effort mounted to get them to do so.

I can't wait to see the 'Hawks and Kings go at it again in the Conference Finals (hopefully!).

By the way, Grim- do you know that one sports league has an award to the "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability" each season? It's the NHL's LLady Byng Trophy.

Perhaps we can get you to become a hockey fan. Georgia could use a few.

Why not? I love violence. Gentlemanly violence most of all.
