Say what?

I was casually reading an article describing the pain of a Ron Paul supporter who doesn't want to throw her vote away writing in her favorite candidate, but feels that otherwise she's got only a choice between "welfare and warfare."  Then she remarked, to illustrate that there's nothing to choose:  "One wants the fishing pole, the other wants the shoe."  I'm stumped, even after some search-engine work.  Does anyone here know the joke or story she's referring to?

I'm afraid I don't know the joke. I only know one joke about fishing rods and shoes, and it doesn't refer.

The joke I am thinking of is the one about the businessman who was having an affair with his secretary, and they fell asleep. When they woke and realized how late it had gotten, the miscreants panicked because they were sure they were caught. The businessman told his secretary to take his shoes, though, and rub them in the grass while he got dressed.

After that he put on his shoes and went home. His wife met him at the door with a frying pan. "Where have you been?" she demanded.

"I was having an affair with my secretary, and we fell asleep," the businessman calmly replied.

The wife looked at his shoes and said, "You liar! You've been FISHING!"

Give a man a fish from the government's fishing pole, or give him combat boots for the government's wars?

That's a stretch.

Being the HillWilliam guest at The Hall, I sourced the Bubbasetta Stone... NADA. Nor could I find a parable on the fishing pole and the shoe in the You Might Be A Redneck self-help manual.

I see the quote has a bit more to it:

"Pick where your money's spent on. One wants the fishing pole, the other one wants the shoe. And there's no difference."

That sounds like husband and wife deciding where the (non?) disposable income is going. Perhaps...

That does sound plausible. I was taking it to mean something more like "six of one, half dozen of the other," but the budget explanation works.
